One of the most photographed places on earth, Central Park is a jewel of nature in the heart of Manhattan, its winding paths just steps from Hunter College's 68th Street Campus. This weekend workshop plunges into the park's storied history and its extraordinary visual afterlife, tracing how photographers have fallen under its spell from its earliest days to the present. We'll pore over images spanning 1858 to now, from luminous wet plate glass negatives to iconic 20th-century masterworks, before setting out into the park itself, threading through both its celebrated landmarks and its hidden, half-secret corners. On both days, students are set loose to shoot freely and instinctively, with hands-on guidance for reading and responding to each location.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
