Whether you identify as a self-portrait artist, portraitist, or fashion photographer, your understanding of the role of the female body in your images is essential to creating meaningful work that honors the complexities of identity and representation. This course traces the portrayal of women’s bodies in photography—from early fashion and fine art images to today’s more socially conscious media—with a focus on themes of identity, agency, and empowerment. As students cultivate a decolonized perspective of the female body and gaze, they develop a personal project that examines these ideas in depth.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Welcome to The Body as Muse: Exploring Power and Representation in Photography. For our first class, please bring a portfolio of 10 to 15 of your favorite images that you’ve taken of the human body—this could include portraits, fashion, or any work that explores the figure. These images will serve as a starting point for our discussions and creative exploration throughout the course
