The practice of making photographs daily helps us to become more engaged with the feelings, ideas, and events that motivate our photography and inspire creative habits. In this course, students photograph every day, regardless of other commitments, and keep a visual diary of the experience. Participants share pictures they make each week with the group. Our review of student work provides individual guidance, encouragement, and refinement of technique. Everyone's participation is essential to developing a meaningful exchange of ideas.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.

To prepare for the first class session, make 100 close-up pictures of one special person, pet or favorite place you often visit. Get as close as your camera will allow, but no further than three feet away. Take all 100 images at one time, or over a period of time. Consider what was this experience was like for you. Write a paragraph about the experience - what you found pleasurable and what you found challenging. Write your thoughts in a dedicated journal for this class. Next, you'll prepare the images to share at the first class. Resize all your images to a jpeg format of no larger than 1000 pixels in height and width. Create one folder with ALL 100 images, labeled as follows: Your last name_Assignment 1_ALL (date completed). Next, edit a selection of 10 of these 100 images that you feel best represent the experience. Put those ten images in a second folder labeled as follows: Your last name_Assignment 1_SELECTIONS (date completed). Have both of these folders available on your desktop and ready to share with the class, along with your written entry into your journal.

For each class session there will be either a research or reading component. Before the first class read chapter one of "The Art and Fear" by David Bayles and Ted Orland (The Image Continuum, Santa Cruz, CA). It is available online and in print. Be prepared to discuss it at the first class. If you are unsure how to operate your camera, read the manual NOW. Don't wait. If you don't have one, get it online. Come equipped with your camera and your journal to record your notes, thoughts, feelings and impressions during the class and for each day afterward. Your camera and journal will be your steady companions throughout the course.
