Led by an established art critic and editor, this intensive weekend workshop centers on exercises designed to help artists develop and refine language for their work. The course involves independent and group writing prompts, close looking sessions, and reading assignments. Students should arrive with a drafted artist statement that addresses a recent series or representative bodies of work, and they should be ready to show and discuss their work as well as receive and incorporate feedback on their writing. Participants leave with an edited statement, short writing samples, and a set of skills to continue developing language around their work.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
