Urban Constructs: The Cityscape in Photography

How does the urban environment reflect the changing state of the human condition? In this six-week course, participants create their own portfolios of work while learning about photographers and artists who specifically utilize the complexities of the cityscape to reflect the current challenges of humanity. Each week, we study various photographs, analyzing how the composition, time of day, era in which the image was created, and other clues can both support the overall energy and concept of the photograph and indicate greater social and cultural powers at play. Students produce their own urban cityscape photographs and participate in weekly critiques.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with your photographic practice. You have already produced or are working on a body of work. You are proficient in Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, et cetera. You understand printing or portfolio revision processes. You may be seeking ways to strengthen your work through sequencing, theoretical readings, and group critiques.
