This course introduces a variety of important and “alternative” figures in photographic history, from 1900 to the present, paying particular attention to related concepts that continue to shape the medium. We approach the subject as a broad investigation, rather than an in-depth analysis, via lectures and short weekly research assignments designed to “fill in the gaps.” Students critically discuss their ideas regarding the role of the camera and that of the photographer, and they are encouraged to deepen their understanding about what they see in the world around them as well as how they interpret it.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
