Advanced Black-and-White Darkroom

This advanced course is designed for students with a strong commitment to mastering the technical, practical, and aesthetic aspects of black-and-white photography. We focus on producing exhibition-quality silver prints while encouraging each student to develop a unique personal approach to their work. Through extensive darkroom demonstrations, critiques, and theoretical readings, participants examine the practices of renowned photographers. Discussions center on how to refine technical choices so they align with personal visual intentions. We also cover sequencing and presentation methods, including exhibitions, books, and zines. Students should be proficient in using their equipment, handling film, and working in the darkroom.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with your photographic practice. You have already produced or are working on a body of work. You are proficient in Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, et cetera. You understand printing or portfolio revision processes. You may be seeking ways to strengthen your work through sequencing, theoretical readings, and group critiques.
