Photography as Sculpture: Cyanotype Printing on Paper, Textiles and Clay

Course Code: 25SOEAP007I

Dates: May 10-11, 2025

Meets: Sa and Su from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM ET

Location: ICP (84 Ludlow Street)

Course Tuition: $550

Cyanotype offers photographers the means to create images not limited to the traditional print on the wall. When used on organic materials, such as clay, paper, or cloth, the process allows artists to transform handcrafted objects into three-dimensional photographs. In this hands-on course, students experiment with swatches of cloth and pre-fired clay tiles, and they create a cyanotype clay sculpture. We also cover the basics of cyanotype and printing on nontraditional materials, including making tests and determining the proper exposure time for final prints. Participants learn how to continue printing cyanotypes and working with alternative printing materials on their own.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

Students are encouraged to review ICP's Classroom Disclaimer for current information regarding COVID-19 policies, classroom guidelines, and more. These policies are subject to change at any time.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class. Registration for this course will close one day prior to the start date of the course.

Prior to the first session, you will receive a short passage from Hervé Guibert's *Ghost Image* via email. Please read the passage carefully and reflect on its themes. After reading, complete the following questions and come prepared to discuss your responses on the first day of class:

1. What can photography achieve that sculpture cannot? 2. What can sculpture achieve that photography cannot? 3. What other medium(s) do you wish you could incorporate more into your photography?

These questions are designed to spark a thoughtful discussion and set the foundation for our explorations in class.
