Teen Academy - Zine-Making Workshop

Learn to create art with the world around you. Join us for this multimedia workshop using personal, natural, and archival materials to create zines of your favorite things and about issues that are important to you. From politics to play, zines are a foundational tool for self-expression integrating photography, writing, collage, and more. Students will be introduced to the historical importance and examples of zine-making in wide-ranging social movements around the world then make their own. Students will be asked to collect pieces of their lives, from old photographs and stickers, to leaves and other found materials, and let their creativity fly by learning to look at a blank canvas, consider how we can creatively articulate a message, and structure a zine. Students will learn how to sort through the puzzles of their lives through objects, imagery and text to turn their imaginations and subjects at the heart into tangible artworks. We will learn the importance of zine-making and journaling in. This class utilizes drawing, instant photography tools, and other traditional and avant-garde zine materials.

Course Level/Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. No prior photography experience is needed for these foundation courses.
Note: Students will be asked to bring in all types of small materials to integrate into their zines. Art supplies and additional zine-making materials will be provided, but students are expected to bring materials of personal significance to the workshops, which will be explained further by the workshop instructor.
Program Description: ICP’s Teen Academy program welcomes teenagers ages 14–19 from across the country and around the world to develop their skills as leaders and visual storytellers in a range of in-person and online classes. All curricula are youth-centered and include: photographic and writing assignments, open lab time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a guest artist visit, a field trip, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.
