Light is one of the key components of every great picture; it creates atmosphere, reveals or hides details, and creates compelling visual effects. This program offers intermediate photographers the opportunity to acquire important technical knowledge and expand their artistic background in order to creatively use light as part of their practice. Through hands-on practice and assignments both in the studio and on location, students learn about a vast range of lighting equipment and accessories, while gaining experience in using a range of light sources, including continuous lights, studio strobe, portable flashes, and natural daylight. Students refine their skills and aesthetics for the purpose of developing a personal style and capturing dynamic portfolio images. .

The Lighting Foundations Intensive is an onsite program which may include online elective courses.

Prerequisites: The Lighting Foundations Intensive is an intermediate program: You are familiar with your camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to understand how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way or how to utilize concepts and ideas in relation to your portfolio of work while learning about lighting. In addition, students must meet the prerequisites of each course they register for as part of the program.
