From the poetic paintings of the Dutch Masters to commercial products in catalogs, the still life is ubiquitous in art and photography. How can we express ideas by arranging a collection of objects? How can lighting convey emotions? In this course, students will learn about artists working in the genre and create their own “do-it-yourself” home studio. Through demonstrations and weekly assignments, students will experiment with using both ambient and artificial light to illuminate a still life. Understanding how light behaves will allow us to manipulate it through reflections, diffusion, and blocking. Supported by in-class critiques, students will end the course with a cohesive portfolio of still life photographs.
Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced are welcome.
Need-based scholarships are available for all Teen Academy classes. To apply, please visit: www.icp.org/school/teen-academy
