The Art of the Photobook: From Lens to Print

The photobook is an art form in and of itself. Within this medium, photographs take on another dimension through the creation of different meanings and perspectives. In this class, students explore the photobook with the final goal of creating their own. We examine the medium’s history and most influential books to better understand the approaches behind it. Then, we delve into the details of photobook-making and storytelling, including selection and editing, sequencing and sizing, and design and layout.

Students will have a copy of their finished book printed by Conveyor Studio. Charges for printing one copy of the book are included in the material fee. Students will be responsible to pay thier own shipping fees directly to Conveyor Studio. Students may wish to upgrade certain aspects of the printing; these additional charges will also be charged directly to the student. For further information please contact [email protected].

This course is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with the use of Photoshop. You are comfortable editing and processing your images.

Note: Adobe InDesign is required for this course; previous knowledge is not required.

Additional Note: Students should have a relatively large body of work, or found archive, or other materials (in photographic form) with an overarching concept. Students will need to have digital files of all images by the second class.
