This online workshop considers the poetic potentials of photography for feminist art practice. Assignments are formulated around a series of questions: How can we define feminist photography? What does it look like? What does it do? How does feminist photography weave artistic form and content? We examine the continuity of feminist concerns and strategies through an examination of historical and contemporary work. We will discuss the continuity of feminist concerns and strategies through an examination of the historical and contemporary work including the Ovular Workshops, Jo Spence, Abigail Heyman, Carrie Mae Weems, Lorna Simpson, Latoya Ruby Frazier, Justine Kurland, and Paul Mpagi Sepuya.Students work on projects that engage documentary strategies, performance-based approaches, and appropriated materials, and participate in presentations and discussions.
Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with your photographic practice. You have already produced or are working on a body of work. You are proficient in Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, et cetera. You understand printing or portfolio revision processes. You may be seeking ways to strengthen your work through sequencing, theoretical readings, and group critiques.
