The Book as Frame

Course Code: 21SCEPV260

Dates: April 7 - June 9, 2021

Meets: W from 2:00 PM to 5:00 PM EST EST

Spring Tuition: $770

This course draws on the current enthusiasm for the photobook as a vehicle for meaning, along with the profusion of venues for self-publishing, as we delve into producing photographic, mixed-media, and text-based books. We consider the page, along with the book itself, as a framing device, while addressing the relationship between text and image, and exploring the notion of text as image. Artists such as Daisuke Yokota and Viviane Sassen provide inspiration as each student produces one to three books. Students may choose to handmake books, or make digital book dummmies. Options will be discussed during the beginning class session. This course is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
