Making/Taking: Community-based Approaches to Making Your Work

"Make” and “take” are often used interchangeably when discussing photographic work. This class examines the differences between these modes of photographic production and emphasizes the importance of making investments in communities you are not from. Lectures, discussions, research, critiques, and readings by Teju Cole, Stanley Wolukau-Wanambwa, Ariella Aïsha Azoulay, and Mark Sealy, engage students in critical dialogues about dismantling fundamental underpinnings of photographing outside of oneself and one’s original context. Participants also work toward a community-based approach to making photographs. This course is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Open to All Skill Levels: Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes.
