The large-format view camera uses a 4"x5" negative to capture a wealth of detail, and in combination with deliberate camera movements, results in unparalleled image quality. This course investigates the technical and aesthetic aspects of using the view camera, in contrast to smaller cameras, including 35mm film and full frame digital cameras. Topics include sheet-film handling and exposure, perspective control, bellows factor, film processing and printing. This course is technically intensive, yet encourages students to pursue their own aesthetic directions. For participants who do not own a large-format camera, ICP provides 4x5 cameras.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Advanced: You are comfortable with your camera, whether film or digital, and with your photographic practice. You have already produced or are working on a body of work. You may be seeking ways to strengthen your work through sequencing, theoretical readings, and group critiques. You understand printing or portfolio revision processes. For digital photography courses: you are proficient in Adobe applications such as Photoshop, Lightroom, Premiere, et cetera.
In accordance with ICP's COVID-19 Safety Guidelines and Policies, all Continuing Education students are required to be fully vaccinated and to have received the most recently available booster shots in order to attend onsite courses.
