Teen Academy - My Visual Journal

In this beginner photography course, students will use their digital tools to reflect on the people, places, and things that are important to them. They will be encouraged to create photographs on a daily basis in a "visual journal" of their thoughts, feelings, and inspirations. Lessons each week will dive into the fundamentals of image-making, such as color, composition and understanding directional lighting. We will meet in our virtual classroom for peer critiques in addition to completing in-class photographic and written exercises. The class culminates with a presentation of visual journals and artist statements presented to family and friends.

ICP’s Teen Academy program welcomes teenagers ages 14–19 from across the country and around the world to develop their skills as leaders and visual storytellers in a range of online classes. All curricula is youth-centered and includes: photographic and writing assignments, digital open lab time, visual presentations, discussions, critiques, a virtual field trip, a guest artist visit, and a culminating presentation for family and friends celebrating the students’ achievements.

Note: All classes will be held on Zoom. Students must have access to a computer with a webcam and stable internet connection in order to participate. Students must have access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or digital point and shoot camera to complete assignments. A link to join the class and additional course preparation information will be shared closer to the start of the class. Students must have access to a laptop or desktop computer with a webcam and stable internet connection.

Courses are subject to minimum enrollment. Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class.
