In this course students develop the skills to realize their creative photographic vision in printed form. Students learn a streamlined digital printing workflow, building the foundation they need to produce fine prints on a variety of papers. Topics include: pre-visualization; effective methods for using Lightroom Classic and Photoshop software for printing; scanning negatives and techniques for using Photoshop to achieve local adjustments. Image resolution, resizing, sharpening, ICC profiles and paper choices will also be discussed. Class critiques and hands-on work in the Digital Media Lab reinforce essential concepts and printing skills.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

For our first session, please bring your 5 most successful prints to share with the class. These can be from any project, do not worry about showing a cohesive body of work. They can be any size or paper type. This also including darkroom prints and prints made from outside labs including 4x6 machine prints. The purpose is to evaluate where you are with the photographic printing process. It’s okay if you have never made a print yourself, that is what this course is about.
