This course is designed to develop the photographer’s skill set working with speedlights and strobe lights – both inside the studio and on location. With an emphasis on technical workflow, students learn to construct a variety of practical lighting solutions using techniques and concepts borrowed from modern editorial shoots, contemporary photographers, and iconic styles. Students learn to work effectively with a single light, then progress to building sets that incorporate half a dozen lights and utilize a variety of light shaping tools. The class also receives instruction on how to build a portable lighting kit that suits each student's individual artistic approach. Addtional lessons explore dynamic combinations of hard light and soft light, mix artificial light and available light, and experiment with using gels to create a specific color palette. Through demonstrations, lessons, and class discussions, students discover the combination of lighting techniques that compliment their personal photographic aesthetic.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
