Complicating the Diptych: Two Does Not Equal Two

The diptych is a deceivingly simple compositional device, in which comparison and division are generative forces. This course considers writings and artworks by Emily Jacir, Ursula Le Guin, Lorraine O’Grady, and others that reveal how juxtapositions can evoke larger narratives, prompt nuanced readings, illuminate internal hierarchies, or locate gaps between ideas. As O’Grady writes, “Two does not equal two here… White doesn’t equal black, male doesn’t equal female… the binary contains a hidden third term that accounts for the superiority of one side of the binary over the other.” Each class will involve discussions of critical essays and artists' projects about displacement, feminism, and other themes, and students will be prompted to create diptychs in response. The course includes weekly critiques, writing prompts, and a final project. This course is limited to 12 students.

Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
