The most compelling documentary projects seamlessly blend the photographer’s personal voice and artistic vision with a steadfast dedication to factual integrity. Through hands-on exercises, in-depth critiques, and dynamic discussions of both classic and contemporary photographers, this course empowers students to sharpen their observational skills, refine their visual storytelling, and develop a distinct photographic voice. Participants strengthen their ability to create visually compelling and ethically sound documentary work that embodies the essence of their chosen subjects.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Please reflect on the work of photographers who you feel integrate a personal, or poetic, style with a commitment to documenting the world. If you have an ongoing project, or work you wish to show the group, shortly before the course starts you will receive the instructor's email, where you may send a link or a folder of pictures.
