In this course, Brooklyn-based street-portrait photographer Amy Touchette discusses various methodologies used by street photographers, the psychology behind getting the portrait you envision (including how and why to embrace fear), the role of the mind-body connection, how to gain the trust of strangers quickly and wordlessly, and what to do when things take a turn for the worse, among many other topics. Classes comprise lectures as well as discussions and critiques of the photographs students make for their weekly assignments. Any camera will do, as long as you are able to process and share your images on a weekly basis.

Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.

In accordance with ICP’s COVID-19 Safety Guidelines and Policies, all Continuing Education students are required to be fully vaccinated in order to attend onsite courses. Students will be required to provide proof of their vaccination status during the registration process, unless an exemption has been granted. Masks are strongly recommended, but not required in class and in other public areas of ICP to protect the health and safety of all employees, students and visitors. These policies are subject to change at anytime.

Please register early, within five days of the start-date, to reduce the likelihood of course cancellation and to ensure you receive all course-related materials in time to prepare for class. To prepare for the class, please bring 15-20 images you have made of either: people on the street, portraits, or another selection of images (ideally with people in them) as a way of introducing yourself to class. You can put these images on a flash drive, upload them somewhere (Dropbox, cloud, etc.) that you can access using the classroom computer, or bring actual prints. Please also read the short-but-sweet essay, "The Joy of Photography" by Ernst Haas, which I will provide the week before class. Any camera will do, so long as you are able to process and share your images on a weekly basis.
