This class introduces participants to a variety of methods for creating unique gelatin silver prints without the use of an enlarger. Students work with one or two alternative light sources and materials that can be found readily in their homes or purchased inexpensively. As they learn about their materials and gain confidence with their exposures, participants begin to refine their processes in ways that best suit their personal practices. This course is designed to help you embrace the freedom of experimental printing while making more intuitive and expressive artwork.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Open to all skill levels. Students ranging from beginner to experienced will be successful in classes that are Open to All Skill Levels.
In accordance with ICP’s COVID-19 Safety Guidelines and Policies, all Continuing Education students are required to be fully vaccinated in order to attend onsite courses. Students are encouraged to look for alternate light sources and materials around their homes and bring with them on the first day of class - and to start thinking about what a photograph is, as well as what else it can be... I'd also like them to come to class with a brief statement on what they hope to learn, an open mind - and no expectations of being able to get their exposures down the first try (it could take a few weeks for them to really get them down, depending on how much prior experience they have with printing/photography, and what they choose as far as materials/light sources).
