There is a noticeable difference between an ordinary portrait and a truly memorable portrait. The memorable portrait establishes a connection to the soul of the subject: the near mystical play of dark and light, the angle that is just right, or the suggestive spread of a shadow that accents an expression can elevate a photo to a much higher creative plane. This workshop helps students break out of the box of ordinary portraiture and lighting into a new, more interpretive realm of portrait photography. Participants will be challenged to re-invent how they see light and composition. With a better understanding of each separately, combing the two will give them the ability to construct an image to be technically sound and artistically striking.
Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.

Hello, and welcome to a wonderful class of exploring, creating, learning, and experimenting. This class is designed to give you a solid foundation in understanding light, both available and manufactured light for the creation of that memorable portrait. Remember the goal is always to match your idea, your personal interpretation with the technique. This is a participatory workshop in which you will need your camera, lenses and whatever else you need to take/create pictures. Please bring a few samples of the best you have done and what it is you would like to do. This will give me an opportunity to concentrate on some areas of specific interest.
