There is a long and rich history of black-and-white film portraits in photography. From the first daguerreotype, to contemporary photographers such as Dawoud Bey, the portrait on black-and-white film continues to have a strong presence in the medium. Working with natural and artificial light in the studio and on location, students explore the traditions and process of black-and-white film portraiture, learning about essential decisions involving context, focus, and framing. The class learns techniques for directing photographic subjects and composing images to create a more compelling portrait. The class also includes technical instruction on different types of film available, camera ASA, and metering.Course Level / Prerequisite: Intermediate: You are familiar with a camera, whether film or digital. You understand aperture, shutter speed, exposure, white balance, histograms, and how to control focus. You are comfortable editing and processing your images. You may want to learn how to utilize your camera in a more thoughtful and articulate way, or learn more about lighting or how to utilize theoretical concepts in relation to your portfolio of work.
