NYC In Focus: Summertime Stories

This two-week intensive digital photography class takes students on a whirlwind adventure around New York City, while teaching them to capture their unique perspectives along the way. From the bright lights of Times Square, to the nostalgia of the Wonder Wheel at Coney Island, to the unique character of our diverse neighborhoods, students will use photography to show the magic of the city through their eyes. Demonstrations and hands-on lessons will introduce students participants to the craft and aesthetics of photography, as well asand enhance their digital skills using the camera, computer, and printer. Through writing exercises, different techniques are will be presented for using words with images. Critiques led by faculty and guest artists will foster confidence, as students discuss their images and reflect upon their progress. By the end of the course, students will have developed a portfolio of prints with accompanying text- that telling their summertime stories. The program will culminates in a final presentation for family and friends. There is no prerequisite for this course. DSLR cameras, courtesy of Canon USA, are provided to all who need them.

Photography I: Introduction to Digital Photography

This introductory digital photography course explores the creative and technical possibilities of the medium. Demonstrations and hands-on lessons introduce participants to the craft and the aesthetics of digital imagemaking. Students enhance their skills using the camera, computer, and printer.

Photography I: Introduction to Fashion Photography

This introductory digital photography course examines both technical and aesthetic approaches to fashion photography. Through shooting assignments, critiques, and meetings with industry professionals, students learn about lighting styles, working with models, and other fundamental skills needed to produce compelling photographs for the fashion industry.

Photography I: Principles of Digital Photography

In this course for beginners, teenagers will learn the basic principles of digital photography, from composing images to the effects of light. Through photographic assignments, students will expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of digital image-making and output on their choice of subject matter. Students will also write about their work in creating a culminating project.

Photo I in Digital: Summertime Stories

Images are everywhere, but how do you tell a story through your photographs? This one-week intensive digital photography class introduces teens to the basic principles of digital image-making, from composing to exploring the effects of light. Through photographic assignments whether staying at home or venturing outside, students expand their understanding of the technical and aesthetic possibilities of digital capture and output on the subject matter of their choice. Through writing exercises, different techniques will be presented for using words with images. Critiques led by faculty and guest artists will foster confidence in storytelling, as students discuss their work and reflect upon their progress. By the end of the course, students will have developed a series of images with accompanying text that tell their summertime stories! Students must have access to a computer with a webcam and stable internet connection in order to participate. Students must have access to a smartphone, DSLR or mirrorless camera, or digital point and shoot camera to complete assignments.
